A Story of Growth, Learning, and Impact

As GanzAfrica’s inaugural fellowship draws to the finish we celebrate the remarkable journeys and achievements of our first cohort of change makers. These young professionals, representing a diverse range of backgrounds and interests, embarked on a unique learning experience designed to prepare them to be impactful leaders who can shape Africa’s agri food systems on which communities can thrive.

A Fellowship Designed for Growth

For our inaugural fellows, many at the start of their careers, the GanzAfrica fellowship offered the perfect launchpad. These fellows gained essential analytical, technical and leadership skills, preparing them for successful secondments in various government institutions. The program’s blend of skills development, work experience, and mentorship empowered them to navigate their chosen fields with confidence and purpose. Graduating fellow Joel Jonathansays “I am now more confident in my career, I know that I can take on different roles, learn, grow and deliver ”

Impact Beyond Measure

The fellowship’s impact has been profound. Fellows describe the program as a transformative experience that will not only enhance their careers but has also deepened their understanding of the complex issues facing their communities and the continent as a whole. Climate Finance fellow Joël RUKUNDO , reflects how attending the Africa Food Systems Forum (AGRF) 2023 illuminated the profound impact his work can have, and ignited an even stronger passion to contribute to a sustainable climate resilient future for Africa.

Joel’s story echoes the sentiments of many in Cohort 1. They’ve learned from industry experts, grown their networks, and developed a clearer vision of their respective fields as well as their roles in creating change.

Government Secondments Propel Fellows’ Careers

GanzAfrica fellows made a real impact during their secondments. At the National Land Authority, Gilbert RUGENGAMANZI and Diane Uwingabire contributed to the development of multiple district land use plans, gaining valuable skills and insights into sustainable land use management. Their significant contribution informed the design of practical, evidence-informed and community-led land use plans in different districts. At the Ministry of Environment, Joël RUKUNDO and Joel Jonathan worked on diverse projects, including using GIS applications to support various projects, evaluating forest landscape restoration to policy evaluation, therefore deepening their understanding of environmental challenges and inspiring them to drive change for a sustainable future.

Evidence-Based Approaches – A Key to Sustainable Change

At the core of the GanzAfrica fellowship program is an emphasis on evidence-informed approaches for sustainable impact. We believe that data and evidence coupled with rigorous analysis are critical ingredients in designing long lasting solutions.  This focus on the use of data and evidence has empowered our fellows to support government institutions during their secondments, to strengthen decision-making processes and inform policy development.

A Culture of Integrity , Openness and Community

Beyond the structured learning, our fellows highlight the unique culture at GanzAfrica. A culture where integrity is paramount, as our Director, Thierry Hoza Ngoga , consistently emphasizes. A culture that fosters open communication, where ideas are valued, feedback is welcomed, and doors are always open for meaningful dialogue. Furthermore the fellows describe it as a fellowship of peers committed to mutual support, collaborative learning, and knowledge exchange. As one of our fellows Joel says: “Being part of a dynamic group of fellows is incredibly motivating. The collaborative environment fosters creativity and innovation. We often gathered to brainstorm, discussing how to tackle different issues and to devise solutions. I’m always inspired by my peers and get to learn from them.”

A Lasting Legacy

As we bid farewell to Cohort 1 , we know that their journey with GanzAfrica is far from over. Their insights and experiences are invaluable as we continue to refine our programs and approach. We are immensely proud of their growth and eagerly anticipate the positive change they will effect wherever they go.

To our inaugural fellows Diane, Gilbert, Joel and Jonathan: congratulations! You have learned, grown, and are ready to be agents of change in your respective fields. We are honored to have walked alongside you on this journey and look forward to your continued impact in Rwanda and beyond.
