Recently, GanzAfrica had the privilege of hosting Jeremy Derfner, for an enlightening speaker series session on “Communicating Clearly: A Difficult but Essential Skill.” Jeremy was the head of speechwriting at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation before starting Derfner & Sons, an organization that specializes in producing clear and persuasive written content. Jeremy’s engaging discussion shed light on the complexities of clear communication and provided invaluable tips for mastering this essential skill.
Jeremy began by sharing his career journey and the process behind crafting impactful speeches and essays for public figures. He emphasized the importance of understanding both the speaker’s intent and the expert’s insights before writing. This approach ensures that the content is both accurate and aligned with the speaker’s goals. His story of running Derfner & Sons for a decade provided him with valuable insights into challenges and successes of effective messaging.
One of the key takeaways from Jeremy’s session was his perspective on writing as a thinking exercise. He urged attendees to write with clarity of thought, stressing that knowing what you think is crucial for writing well. Jeremy also highlighted that fear often hinders clarity and efficiency in writing. He encouraged fellows to be confident in their opinions, and write as if they were speaking to a friend.
Another important insight was the emphasis on structure over word choice. Jeremy explained that while words are important, the structure and clarity of thought are paramount. Being specific about your audience and maintaining a low word-to-meaning ratio helps convey ideas more effectively.
In addition to communication tips, Jeremy shared general career advice. He highlighted the importance of openness, kindness, and respect in professional relationships. Building trust and finding a good mentor as critical elements for career growth.
The session equipped GanzAfrica fellows with practical skills that are expected to significantly enhance their day-to-day activities. The insights gained from Jeremy’s talk will aid them in communicating more effectively in their professional and personal interactions, ensuring clarity and impact in their messaging.
When asked whether we should always tell the truth in communication, Jeremy advocated for conveying honesty in a manner that is both respectful and culturally sensitive. He emphasized the need to balance truth with kindness, and politeness in professional settings.
Jeremy’s session was a masterclass in the art of communication. His insights on clarity, confidence, and effective messaging resonated deeply with the GanzAfrica fellows, equipping them with practical skills to enhance their own communication abilities.
